SMC Paralegal Student Awarded $1000 Scholarship

SPARTANBURG -  A Spartanburg Methodist College Paralegal Certification Program student has been selected as the recipient of a $1000 scholarship from the Legal Staff Professionals of South Carolina.   

Ms. Jalitha Moore, a senior-level student who will graduate in November from the SMC evening program, was recently named the 2008 recipient of the scholarship.   Moore is a graduate of Winthrop College with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a minor in Psychology.   

The LPSC is an affiliate of the National Association of Legal Secretaries. The LSPSC has six chapters, including the Spartanburg County Legal Staff Professionals chapter

Moore recently joined the staff of the 7th Circuit Solicitor's Office for Spartanburg County.  Prior to this position, she was employed for three years as the Assistant Manager of First Franklin Financial.   

"I have been very impressed with Jalitha's integrity and excellent moral character," says Yvonne Harper, director of the SMC Paralegal Certification Program.     

"Our program is a non-academic credit program; however, progress is measured at the end of each 10-week term.   Jalitha has consistently performed well academically and has been a straight "A" student maintaining a perfect 4.0 Grade Point Ratio in all of her courses," adds Harper.

Registration for the summer session of the Paralegal Certification Program is currently underway.  Courses being offered during the summer session include Introduction to Paralegal Studies, Professional Paralegal Job Search, Legal Ethics, and Communications for the Law Office.   

A total of 20 courses, with each course meeting 10 times, and a 40-hour internship are required for completion of SMC's Paralegal Certification Program. All legal specialty courses within the program are taught by local judges, attorneys and/or paralegals.  

The registration deadline for the Summer term is June 10. Classes start on June 24 and are $275 each. Courses can be audited by the general public for $125 per course.  An application to enroll in the Paralegal Certification Program, along with registration forms, can be found online by going to the Paralegal Program page at www.smcsc.edu.

SPARTANBURG, SC - Spartanburg Methodist College recently hired a Katie HeathSpartanburg native as its Athletic Fundraising Director.

Katie Taylor Heath, 28, of Spartanburg, took over the duties of Athletic Fundraising Director in June.  

In this position, she will be responsible for overseeing the Pioneer Club, which raises funds to support the College's athletic program.  

Mrs. Heath is a 2005 graduate of the University of South Carolina Upstate with a degree in Political Science and has a background in fundraising.

She most recently worked as Vice President of Development for the Spartanburg Humane Society, and previously as Assistant Director of Annual Giving at Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic.

She and her husband BJ live in Spartanburg. They are expecting their first child, a daughter, in July.
