SMC To Host Spartanburg Mayoral Candidate Forum

10/26/09

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

SPARTANBURG, SC - Spartanburg Methodist College will host a public forum for the city of Spartanburg's mayoral candidates on Friday, Oct. 30 at 11 am in the Davis Mission Chapel on the SMC campus.

The public is invited to attend the event, during which the two candidates - Spartanburg businessman Mike Fowler and city council member Junie White  - will field questions from SMC's Student Government Association and the general public.

Fowler, 48, a self-employed salesman, and White, 72, a one-term city council District 4 representative, are running for the position being vacated by two-term mayor Bill Barnet, who earlier this year announced he would not seek re-election.

The forum is being organized by the SMC Student Government Association.

"As college students in Spartanburg, we (SMC students) have a vested interest in the outcome of this and other local races - especially the mayor's race because that person plays such a key role in the CollegeTown initiative. They have a lot of influence over its funding, as well over a wide range of other issues that affect SMC and the other colleges in the Spartanburg community. We also want to give our local students who are able to vote in this election, as well as the general public, an additional opportunity to become more informed about the candidates and their platforms," says Brandon Hunter, SGA president.
