SMC Alumni Weekend Set For March 26, 27

03/19/10

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Spartanburg Methodist College will host its annual Alumni Weekend on March 26th and 27th with a two-day event allowing alumni from across the years to reconnect.

Alumni will be hosted at a reception at SMC president Dr. Colleen Keith's home the evening of Friday, Mar. 26.

Activities on Saturday, March 27, include a silent auction and an awards luncheon, along with individual class reunions, and an alumni reception and talent showcase at the BMW Zentrum in Greer.

"The Alum Weekend is always a great opportunity for all of our alums to interact, come back and visit the campus, and strengthen the connection they have both to the institution and to each other. We're also excited about the fact we're offering something new this year, the reception at BMW, which is part of a series of events we're starting this year," says SMC alumni affairs director Leah Pruitt.

SMC's alumni office has begun this year hosting a series of alumni receptions and gatherings across the state, to increase the office's outreach and provide additional opportunities for alumni to get together.

The alumni office has already hosted a well-attended reception in Charleston this year, and has events planned for several other areas of the state throughout the year, including in the Florence/Myrtle Beach, Rock Hill, Columbia, Orangeburg, and Greenville areas.

The Alumni Weekend will also focus on honoring distinguished SMC alums at the awards luncheon. Those being recognized with awards include:

  • Young Alum of the Year: Abigail Harper, a 2008 SMC graduate who served as Student Government Association president while at SMC, and who is currently attending the College of Charleston;
  • Alum of the Year: Craig Newton, a 1976 SMC alum, who serves as the Newberry County (SC) coroner;
  • Distinguished Alum of the Year: Frank Mathis, a 1965 alum of Spartanburg Junior College, who currently serves as a business consultant;
  • Distinguished Service Award: Sharon Porter, Director of Student Support Services and Psychology professor at SMC, who serves as chairman of the Spartanburg School District 7 Board of Trustees.

"We are so excited to honor these folks for their outstanding accomplishments and for all that they have given back to their communities. They are representative of the dedication of the SMC student body and the mission of this institution - and we are very proud of them," adds Pruitt.
