SMC Announces Bridge Agreements with Wofford College, College of Charleston
10/12/10
SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- Spartanburg Methodist College has added two new bridge programs to its current roster of transfer agreements with four-year institutions and is working on others.
"We are very excited to announce agreements with Wofford and the College of Charleston. These bridge programs will further enhance the value of SMC's 2+2 approach by offering a seamless transition into these institutions, but will also create a collaborative framework that will guide and support students to help prepare them for increased success there," says Dan Philbeck, SMC vice president of enrollment management.
Philbeck emphasized, "Our 2+2 approach treats the four-year student much like a post-graduate student earning degrees in two-year increments, so it is very important for SMC students to be confident that their courses and leadership experiences will be recognized by the college of their choosing."
Brand Stille, vice president for enrollment at Wofford, welcomed the agreements saying, "Many Wofford graduates started their college careers at Spartanburg Methodist College, including the valedictorian of my Wofford class. As SMC celebrates her centennial year of service, Wofford College continues to welcome SMC graduates as they pursue their educational goals and objectives. "
Dorinda Harmon, director of admissions, transfer and adult students at the College of Charleston, is enthusiastic in her support of the agreements.
"The College of Charleston is excited about our formal relationship with Spartanburg Methodist College. This will serve to strengthen the academic path for students in course selection and admissions application to the College of Charleston for participating students," says Harmon.
Laura Taylor, College of Charleston upstate transfer director added, "This agreement will assist us in early identification of students planning to transfer to the College of Charleston and enhance their admissions process. I'm looking forward to working with Spartanburg Methodist and will be readily available to the students to answer questions and provide guidance with their planning."
Spartanburg Methodist College was founded as Textile Industrial Institute in 1911 by Dr. David English Camak, a graduate of Wofford. Today, SMC is South Carolina's only college devoted exclusively to the freshman and sophomore years.
In addition to bridge programs with Wofford and the College of Charleston, SMC shares articulation transfer agreements with every college in South Carolina and many others across the nation.
Spartanburg Methodist College is celebrating its 100th academic year of providing quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
