The College campus spent the week celebrating its 2010 Homecoming with a wide range of activities for students. Three Homecoming: Into the Streets service projects were conducted during the week, during which students helped out at the Spartanburg United Way Gifts in Kind center, Jesse Bobo Elementary, and Hatcher Gardens and Woodland Preserve.
Other activities such as a chili cook-off, ghost walk and bonfire, and a formal ball held at River Falls Plantation kept students busy throughout the week.
The campus community came together on Saturday for the Homecoming / Family Day, for even more activities including a picnic and sporting events.
"It was a very exciting week. We had some great groups of students participate in the service projects. Everyone seemed to enjoy all the activities we had. Homecoming is always a great way to get people, including students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni together to celebrate everything that makes SMC special," says Kim Day, SMC director of student activities and leadership development.
Pioneer baseball alums spent the weekend on a golf outing, having dinner at SMC president Dr. Colleen Perry Keith's home, holding a Homerun Derby, and competing in a game on Saturday against the current SMC baseball team.
The current baseball team won the game 8-4 in 11 innings. Chris Kemp, a 2003 graduate of SMC, won the homerun derby with four homers.
SMC also hosted the NJCAA National Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Milliken Research Park, in which the Lady Pioneers finished 10th and the men's team placed 22nd.
The day was capped off with a narrow 80-79 victory for the SMC men's basketball team at home in Bridges Arena.
Spartanburg Methodist College is in its 100th academic year of providing quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
