SMC Events Digest : Aug. 20 - Sept. 10
08/18/10 — '10-'11 Academic Year Starts With Service, Celebration of Centennial
SPARTANBURG, SC - Spartanburg Methodist College is poised for a flurry of activities during the first three weeks of the upcoming academic year, starting with Freshman Move-In on Friday and including the inauguration of SMC president Dr. Colleen P. Keith on Sept. 10.
Resident Student Move-In
Aug. 20, 11 am - 4 pm (Freshmen and new students)
Aug. 23, 1 pm - 5 pm (Sophomore and returning students)
More than 370 Freshmen and new students will be moving into the College's seven residence halls on Friday, starting at 11 am. They comprise 65 percent of the estimated 570 total students currently expected to be living on campus this year. Sophomores will move into their residence halls on Monday, Aug. 23.
Pioneer Power-Up
Aug. 20 -Sept. 23
Freshmen will undergo a four-day Pioneer Power-Up, including events geared at familiarizing them with the SMC campus and community, starting on Friday. The signature event of the Power-Up will be the 10th annual Freshmen Day of Service.

Freshmen Day of Service and Centennial Service Challenge
Aug. 21, 8:30 am - 12:30 pm
Freshmen Day of Service is an event in which freshmen will conduct service projects throughout the Spartanburg community. From painting a home, to stocking a food kitchen, SMC freshmen will be working at 21 project sites. The Day of Service kicks off at 8:30 am in Bridges Arena on the SMC campus.

Kicking off on Aug. 21 in conjunction with the Freshmen Day of Service is the Centennial Service Challenge - which is a service initiative lasting through April 21. For the Challenge, SMC alumni, students, faculty, and staff are all encouraged to conduct at least 100 hours each of community service in the Spartanburg Community.

Welcome Back Block Party
Aug. 23, 9 pm - midnight
This SMC student, faculty, and staff-only event will serve as welcome back event for the entire campus and will include food, music, and outdoor activities. Additional details are still being developed. This event is not open to the general public.
First Day of Classes
Aug. 25, 8 am - 5 pm
The first day of classes for the 2010-2011 academic year will be Wednesday, Aug. 25, with classes beginning at 8 am.
SMC Night at the Greenville Drive
Aug. 27, 7 pm - end of game
SMC students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to attend SMC Night at the Greenville Drive. Alumni tickets are available through the Office of Alumni Relations and student tickets are available through the Department of Student Activities and Leadership Development. SMC tickets are not available to the general public.
College President Dr. Colleen Keith will throw out the first pitch at the game, versus the Asheville Tourists, at Fluor Field in Greenville.
Party on the Plaza and Centennial Events Series
Sept. 9, time TBD
A series of events centered around the celebration of the College's centennial begins this fall, kicking off with a "Party on the Plaza" the evening of Sept. 9 and followed by President Dr. Colleen Keith's inauguration and the fall convocation the following day.
The Party on the Plaza is open to SMC students, faculty, staff and alumni. It will include food and live music - and will be an opportunity for the campus to celebrate the college's history.
Founded on Oct. 25, 1911 as Textile Industrial College, by Dr. David English Camak, SMC celebrates its 100th academic year this year.
Presidential Inauguration and Convocation
Sept. 10, 2 pm
SMC will celebrate the official start of its 100th academic year with the inauguration of its President, Dr. Colleen Perry Keith. Keith began her tenure as SMC's first female president - and the college's seventh president during the history of the College - on July 1, 2009. Her inauguration will coincide with the convocation of the 2010-2011 academic year.
Dr. Bruce Yandle, a member of the SMC Board of Trustees and dean emeritus of the College of Business and Behavioral Science at Clemson University, will serve as the keynote speaker for convocation.
Students, faculty, staff, and invited delegates will be attending this event, which is not open to the public.

Spartanburg Methodist College begins its 100th academic year of providing quality education to students in a Christian environment on Aug. 25, 2010. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
