02/04/10
SPARTANBURG, SC - The Mary Ellen Suitt Gallery at Spartanburg+ Methodist College is currently hosting the works of an internationally known artist.
Scot Belville, a professor of art and history at the University of Georgia, is showing some of his recent work at the Gallery through Wednesday, Feb. 17.
A closing reception for Professor Belville will be held from 5 - 7 pm on Feb. 17, during which he will present a gallery talk at 6 pm. The general public is invited to attend the reception and the talk.
Belville's work has been selected for numerous exhibits in the United States and Europe, and is included in many private, state and public collections including the John Hirshhorn in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, and McDonald's Corporate Headquarters in Chicago, IL. His work has been the recipient of many awards.
"I grew up in the South and I tend to root around through images, memories and thoughts of my own experiences. I also wade into the swamps of contemporary issues. The landfill of consumer trash and global information is my Mt. Everest. In the studio, where my head spins and my heart beats, I try to thrash it all out. Looking for something to put down - for some meaning - makes me feel like a human being," says Belville.
The Mary Ellen Suitt Gallery is located in the Marie Blair Burgess Library at SMC and is open from Monday-Thursday, 8:30 am - 10 pm; Friday, 8:30 am - 1:30 pm; and Sunday, 7 pm - 10 pm.
Spartanburg Methodist College is in its 99th year of providing quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
