GREENSBORO, NC - Spartanburg Methodist College graduates will have a new scholarship option to consider as they leave SMC starting in spring 2011 and prepare to transfer on to four-year institutions.
Greensboro College, a four-year liberal arts college also affiliated with the United Methodist Church, recently announced the establishment of a scholarship which will be made available only to SMC graduates.
The scholarship will be made available starting in January 2011 only to graduates of SMC who transfer directly to Greensboro College upon graduation. It is valued at $8,000 per year for up to three years of attendance in Greensboro College's traditional academic program.
"This scholarship promotes and recognizes the strong tradition of liberal arts education at our two fine United Methodist-affiliated colleges," says Greensboro College President Lawrence D. Czarda.
The scholarship was started by Greensboro College is honor of SMC's recent inauguration of Dr. Colleen Perry Keith as SMC's seventh President.
"On behalf of both Spartanburg Methodist College and myself, I am humbled and honored that Greensboro College has established this scholarship for SMC students on the occasion of my inauguration as president of SMC. As a sister United Methodist College in the liberal arts tradition, the transition of SMC graduates into Greensboro would be a smooth one. Both colleges have a similar student-to-faculty ratio, a similar focus on a strong liberal arts program and leadership development, and caring individual concern for students. The majors represented at Greensboro are those that the majority of SMC students express interest in, which makes Greensboro College a natural fit for SMC graduates to transfer to and earn their baccalaureate degree at. We are grateful to Greensboro College President Lawrence D. Czarda for affirming what we do here at SMC with this scholarship," says SMC President Dr. Colleen Perry Keith.
Greensboro College is an undergraduate, liberal-arts college, also offering four master's degrees. Coeducational and independent, the institution is located near downtown Greensboro. It was founded in 1838 and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
The college enrolls about 1,200 students from about 30 states, the District of Columbia and 21 nations. In addition to rigorous academics and a well-supported Honors program, the school features a 16-sport athletic program and dozens of service and recreational organizations.
Spartanburg Methodist College is celebrating its 100th academic year of providing quality education to students in a Christian environment. SMC was founded in 1911 by Dr. David English Camak as the Textile Industrial Institute. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
