Incoming Freshman Commended for Community Project

ROCK HILL, S.C. --  Trevon Barber, an incoming freshman to Spartanburg Methodist College, was profiled in the Rock Hill Herald for his leading role in the restoration of a neglected cemetery.

Barber, a Boy Scout, began the project in working toward earning his Eagle Scout award.

The cemetery stands as a pivotal piece of Rock Hill's community history - it is one of the few African American cemeteries in the area. Over the years, it fell into serious disrepair, becoming so overgrown it was barely visible.

Barber's effort to restore the cemetery was applauded, and friends and family pitched in to help. The group uncovered 47 graves, some belonging to African American soldiers who fought in World War I and II. This amazing discovery is momentous for Rock Hill, and also stands as a significant historical site for South Carolina.

Barber will begin at SMC this fall, and has plans to wrestle.

Spartanburg Methodist College is in its 100th year of providing quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
