SMC Students Spend Spring Break Serving Others

St. Simon's Island, SC -- A group of Spartanburg Methodist College students spent their spring break taking part in the college's annual Alternative Spring Break in an effort to give back to others.
Nine students joined the college's dean of students, Ron Laffitte, and chaplain Candice Sloan in service projects to benefit the St. Simon's Island, SC community.
Participating in the Alternative Spring Break were SMC students Anjelica Cassias, Roxie Lewis, Hannah Milner, Samantha McSwain, Brittany Tadlock, Randy Carpenter, Steven Green, Joshua Montgomery, and Cameron Martin.
The SMC group started their Alternative Spring Break assisting the area Habitat for Humanity chapter with the construction of a new house.
"I have always worked alone - but I discovered that by working as a team, we could accomplish so much more," says SMC student Joshua Montgomery.
The group spent also spent two days assisting with landscaping and exterior improvement projects at the local Boys and Girls Club. They also played with approximately 300 children at the facility and assisted them with homework as well.
SMC student Hannah Milner commented that after working with the children, she had a "greater appreciation for folks who work with children every day."
Sophomore Randy Carpenter added, "All the small things we do can really have a big impact on people's lives. Something as small as a flower, can brighten their day."
Spartanburg Methodist College is in its 100th academic year of providing quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
