Two New Degree Programs Added

03/31/11

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

SPARTANBURG - Spartanburg Methodist College has received approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to offer two new degree programs: an Associate in Fine Arts Degree and an Associate in Business Degree. Both programs will be introduced in the fall 2011 semester.

The Associate in Fine Arts Degree was of particular interest to SMC because there are no other colleges in South Carolina currently offering an AFA. Each student in the AFA degree program will design his/her program under the direction of an academic advisor with consideration given to the desired transfer institution for the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree or the Bachelor of Arts Degree. All AFA degree candidates will work closely with their academic advisors to earn the 15 hours of required coursework within the students' discipline of choice; either music, art, or drama.

The Associate in Business Degree was developed to facilitate a more fluid transfer for business majors who begin their first two years at SMC.

"Our goal has been to clearly show a 2+2 arrangement for students as we continue to fill our niche as the first two years of a baccalaureate degree," says Dr. Ann Bowles, vice president for academic affairs.

"The business courses offered at SMC are the basic core courses to help students affirm their choice of a buisness major and establish a foundation for upper level business courses," adds Bowles.

With the addition of Advanced Statistics courses in the fall of 2011, SMC students can now pursue their specific interests at an earlier point in their college careers.

The addition of these two new programs brings the total number of associate degrees offered at Spartanburg Methodist College to six.
