Cheryl Somerset Awarded the Dr. James S. Barrett Memorial Award
01/19/12
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Recognized for her outstanding service on campus, Cheryl Somerset was awarded the annual James S. Barrett Memorial Award on Thursday, January 19th, 2012.
Somerset currently serves as Administrative Assistant to the vice President of Academic Affairs, a post she began in 2007. She also serves on the Campaign Committee, and has quickly become a cornerstone on campus.
The Barrett Award recognizes individuals at SMC who go above and beyond their job descriptions in support of the College. At the 2012 Recognition Luncheon, the James S. Barrett award was given to Somerset by members of Dr. James Barrett's family. Dr. Barrett, former beloved President of Spartanburg Methodist College, made an enormous impact on campus. He successfully organized the College's first fundraising campaign, appointed the first Vice President of Institutional Advancement, and dramatically expanded the campus with key trademark buildings -- the Chapel, the Barrett Learning Center, and an expansion of the library.
Though Dr. Barrett passed away in 2007, his legacy lives on. Cheryl Somerset reflects the spirit and strength of the Spartanburg Methodist College Dr. Barrett helped build. Today, SMC continues to grow and prosper with successful fundraising efforts, an expanding campus, and a tremendously supportive staff and faculty.
