Pioneering the Future

The Centennial Campaign for Spartanburg Methodist College

In 1911, Dr. David English Camak founded what was then Textile Industrial Institute. His vision was to provide an educational resource for textile workers throughout the region, not just the Spartanburg community. We are sure he would be amazed at what his vision has grown into today.

SMC is a thriving community of students, staff, and faculty who continue Dr. Camak's legacy of service and education.

More than 800 students attend SMC annually. Its more than 100 faculty and staff are dedicated to ensuring the success of those students and preparing them for a career in today's knowledge-based economy.

Our new campaign will help students have a successful futureEveryone here at SMC is committed to the future of our students, this campus, and more importantly, our community and future generations to come.

Over the past 100 years, SMC has educated attorneys, a governor, legislative representatives, scientists, doctors, professional athletes, corporate executives..... We will continue to do that.

However, in order to remain competitive in today's educational market and to provide the resources our students need, we are embarking on our biggest campaign in many years -- "Pioneering the Future: the Centennial Campaign for Spartanburg Methodist College."

This campaign is multi-faceted. It's goal is to raise $15 million to be utilized in several areas, including:

  • $10 million for: A state of the art academic building, which will be the first on SMC's campus in nearly 40 years. Among its features will be ample classroom spaces; faculty offices; art studios; a student publications suite; a student cafe; and a 225-seat, state-of-the-art auditorium
  • $2 million for: Campus renovations, which are always a neccessity as any educational institution moves forward. At SMC, we have identified several areas for renovations which will include an expansion of the Montgomery Science Building, expansion of athletic offices in the Barrett Learning Center, and dedicating Walker Hall to student support services and classroom space.
  • $3 million for: A substantial increase in student scholarship funds that would continue to provide more students with more opportunities for an affordable education. This campaign will double the amount of scholarship funding available to students each year. More than 90 percent of SMC students receive some form of financial aid. In today's economy, the cost of higher education continues to rise, therefore we strive to assist our students with this cost as much as possible.

We can't do this on our own, however. We ask for your assistance in providing SMC students with these increased opportunities for a strong education and vibrant future. Help us Pioneer the Future for generations of SMC students to come.
