Breast cancer has touched the life of almost every American in some way, shape or form. Whether it's your mother, sister, aunt, daughter, or friend, breast cancer, like many other types of cancer, is a disease that does not discriminate and affects the lives of millions of women each year.

In the summer of 2010, the Spartanburg Methodist College community was shocked when President Colleen P. Keith announced her breast cancer diagnosis. Students, faculty, and staff rallied together to send her cards, flowers, and words of encouragement. Dr. Keith, like so many other women, has been an example to us all as someone who refuses to let this disease get the best of her. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment and is challenging the students to join her in the fight against breast cancer, but more importantly, to stand tall in the face of any distraction or overwhelming circumstance, whatever the case may be.

In honor of her fight and the fight of so many other women, the students of Spartanburg Methodist College held this in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as part of their annual fundraising efforts for Relay For Life. Through this event they hope to educate the community on the realities of breast cancer, to encourage people to fight back against this disease, and to raise money to go towards research, advocacy, patient care, and education so that one day, no woman will ever have to hear the words, "you have breast cancer."

We invite you to join us in this worthy cause!
