Residence Life FAQs


How do I apply for housing?
Talk to your admissions counselor or contact the Housing Office (864-587-4247). A $100 deposit will need to be paid and a housing application will need to be completed.

When will I receive my housing assignment?
Housing assignments are mailed frequently from June through August. Please refer to the Residence Life calendar for specific dates.

Can I change my room assignment?
Possibly. Residence Life sponsors a ''Room Thaw' the second full week of each semester (approximately). Students need to request the room change through his or her Residence Hall Director and, if the change is feasible, the Director of Residence Life will approve it.

Will I have a roommate?
Most likely. SMC requires all students to live on-campus (unless otherwise approved by the Dean of Students); therefore, due to the limited space, private rooms are not readily available.

Can I request a roommate?
Yes. You may request a roommate on the housing application; however, it is not guaranteed that match will be granted.

How do you match roommates if I do not request one?
Roommates are matched according to information filled out on the housing application.

Is furniture provided?
Yes. Each room is equipped with a bed, desk, chair, dresser, and closet. No furniture may be added or removed from the room without permission from the Director of Residence Life. Sofas, chairs, and other upholstered items are not permitted in the residence halls.

What size are the beds in the residence halls?
All of the mattresses in Hammond, Judd, Kingman, Parsons, and Willard Halls are 39x80; the mattresses in Bridges and Sparrow Halls are 36x76. Mattress pads will be provided but the students are asked to bring their own sheets. Extra long sheets can be found in the 'Back-to-School' section in most stores.

Can I bring a loft?
No. SMC does not authorize the use of any lofts.

Can I bring a refrigerator or microwave?
Students are permitted to bring a refrigerator and a small microwave. The refrigerator must be no larger than 4.0 cubic feet.

Can I hang anything on the walls?
Yes, however, SMC requires that nothing be nailed, taped, or drilled in the walls or doors. Please use adhesive hangers that can be removed without damaging the walls or the paint.

Will my room have a computer connection?
Yes, each residence hall is served by a campus wireless internet system. Each residence hall room is also equipped with one data port per student, in addition to a phone line.

Is there a phone in my room?
No. All of the rooms are equipped with one telephone jack and are part of the college telephone system. There is no charge for the service; however, students are encouraged to bring their own phone.

Does SMC provide voicemail?
No. SMC does not provide voice mail service to students, but they are encouraged to bring answering machines.

Can I make long-distance phone calls?
Students can dial '800' numbers from their phones so calling cards can be used.

Is there a curfew?
No. Students can come and go as they please, but we do ask that they are respectful to their neighbors when entering or exiting the building.

Can students have visitors?
Yes. Students are permitted to have visitors as long as they follow the proper procedures for signing the visitors in during the approved hours. All visitors must be at least 17 years of age.

What about safety and security?
Bridges, Hammond, Judd, Kingman, Parsons, and Sparrow Halls are controlled by a computerized card access system; therefore the buildings remain locked at all times. Access is gained using the student's ID card and a personal identification number. Willard Hall is secured with key pad locks on each exterior door. Access is gained using a pin number issued to each Willard resident. Students are not permitted to add additional locks to their doors. Emergency call boxes are located in each parking lot, and Campus Safety is on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For more information, please contact Campus Safety (864-587-4003).

How does my meal plan work?
A student's meal plan is included in the cost of boarding. This permits a student to eat in the cafeteria during meal times. Dining Services is open from 7:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and during specified times on Saturday and Sunday

When can I move in?
Freshman students will move in on Friday, August 19th between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Students living in Bridges, Judd, Kingman, and Sparrow Halls need to report to the individual residence hall for check in. Students living in Parsons Hall will check in at Judd Hall. Students living in Hammond or Willard Halls will need to check in at the Post Office located in the Student Center. Returning students will check in on Monday, August 22nd from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m..

Do I have to clean the bathrooms? Is toilet paper supplied?
Students living in Hammond, Judd, and Willard Halls will have a housekeeping staff member clean the bathrooms; however, we do ask that the students be courteous and clean up after themselves. Students living in Bridges, Kingman, Parsons, and Sparrow Halls will be responsible for their own bathrooms since they are in a suite-style residence hall. Toilet paper is provided to students in all of the residence halls.

Where are the laundry facilities?
Each residence hall is equipped with at least one laundry room. Use of the washers and dryers is free to all residential students.

Does the school provide extra storage?
No. Spartanburg Methodist College is unable to provide storage to students, however local self-storage is available.
