About SMC

Welcome to Spartanburg Methodist College!

We’re glad you’re here.

Since 1911, Spartanburg Methodist College has led the way in innovation in higher education. Early in our history, we launched the first cooperative education program in the country, and we are South Carolina’s first liberal arts college to make career development the centerpiece of our four-year degree programs. We care deeply about our students and their dreams, and we are dedicated to creating a practical liberal arts degree to help them reach their goals.

Like most small private colleges, we offer small class sizes, personalized support, and quality academics to help our students excel in the classroom.  And of course, there are many opportunities for extra-curricular activities that engage students’ diverse talents and interests.

What sets SMC apart from all other liberal arts colleges is our Camak Core – a practical, experiential set of required career development courses that teach students the skills employers say they need college graduates to have to be successful in their chosen careers.

What also makes SMC different is that all students receive an associate degree for completing the first two years of their college education. We do this because we know having a two-year degree will make them more successful on their path to a bachelor’s degree or if they must take a break from college to go directly into the workforce.

60% of our students live on our 110-acre, beautifully wooded campus located in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Our campus is friendly and welcoming. We are a strong, close-knit community with openness – to people, ideas, and differences. At the center of it all are our people who are dedicated to creating a robust educational environment where students can learn and grow to be the best version of themselves that they can be.

As you browse through our website, you will find information about the people, programs, and events that make our college so special. But to truly experience the beauty of our campus and our people, you need to see it for yourself. We can’t wait to meet you.
