Orientation is designed to offer you an introduction to life on campus and to provide important information about academic life.
Our Spring Orientation program is:
- A one-day program with academic courses beginning the next day.
- You will have the opportunity to interact with faculty, staff, administrators and current students.

Yes, orientation should be attended by all new students to set yourself up for success at SMC. All new students should check in at the
Welcome Center lobby between 10am and 12pm on Monday, January 11th to ensure all final checklist items are cleared with Financial Aid, the Business Office, and Wellness teams. Orientation begins at 8:30am on Tuesday, January 11th, per the
downloadable schedule.
All new students should check in at the
Welcome Center lobby between 10am and 12pm on Monday, January 10th. You’ll have all afternoon to complete the move-in process.
Your Student Portal checklist must indicate you are “Clear to begin class” before you are able to pick up your room key, and Financial Office, Business Office, etc. will be on-site to help you with any incomplete items.During the Orientation sessions, you will hear from several key guests about life at SMC, and get vital information to help you succeed. You will also have an opportunity to interact with current student leaders and meet other students who are participating in Orientation activities along with you. You will learn about important policies, expectations, and guidelines all SMC students must follow. A full schedule can be

The Orientation sessions are geared towards helping you succeed as a student, and we encourage you to attend on your own and be engaged to get the most out of each session and begin to make friends around campus. If parents or family have specific questions, we are happy to answer those at
FirstYear@smcsc.edu.
You may have already created a student ID at one of our Enrollment Days. If not, you will visit
Campus Safety during check-in to get your student ID picture taken and your ID printed. You must have your SMC ID card to access your residence hall, use the meal plan in the cafeteria, record your attendance at campus events, and access several student spaces on campus. It is vital that you have your ID with you at all times on campus.
There are several steps you must take before you are clear to begin class. Those steps are outlined on the checklist on your student portal. They include completing the Financial Aid process, paying your bill or setting up a payment plan to cover the balance on your account, and completing other key information we need from you each semester. When your checklist says you are “Clear to begin class,” you have completed the necessary steps to start the semester.

When you pay your deposit with the Admissions Office, you will be contacted by a member of the SMCX Advising Team to set up an appointment for schedule planning. Most likely, you will have completed this step BEFORE you attend Orientation. If not, that’s not a problem! Our advisors will be on campus to assist you before classes begin.
We are finalizing all details for book pick-up with SMC Barnes & Noble bookstore, and you will receive all necessary info by email separately. We will also be on-hand to help you with book pickup at Orientation.
