SMC History Professor to Participate in Workshop
Dr. Cann Receives Grant to Study 19th Century Politics, Culture
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Dr. Katherine D. Cann, Professor of History at Spartanburg Methodist College, has been selected to participate in a workshop for college faculty at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, Ohio.
The workshop, entitled “Untarnishing the Gilded Age: American Politics and Culture, 1870-1901,” is funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Through lectures, small group seminars, and individual research, workshop participants will explore major themes in late 19th century American History. Dr. Cann will have access to the Rutherford Hayes Presidential Library and Museum and will examine the negotiations between Hayes and South Carolina political leaders at the end of Reconstruction in 1876-1877.
