Student Marshals were Amanda Bradley, Chris Dover, and Julie King. Faculty Marshals were Dr. Katherine Cann, Professor of History; and Terry Stephenson, Professor of Mathematics and Chairperson of the Division of Math, Science, Computer Science, Health and Physical Education.

Eric Swing, a graduating student chosen to speak, recalled his choice of SMC over other colleges many of his friends were planning to attend. Quoting poet Robert Frost, Swing said, “taking the road less traveled has made all of the difference.” He expressed appreciation to faculty and staff for their supportiveness, and recounted friendships made with classmates over the past two years. “Like modern day pioneers, we have been given tools to face the problems of the world and the knowledge to succeed,” said Swing.

In his commencement address, SMC President, Dr. Charles  Teague, compared the metamorphsis of incoming freshmen into graduates to that of how a caterpillar is transformed into a butterfly. He challenged the new graduates to “spread your wings and fly.”  He added, “Gracefully surrender the things of youth and allow what you have learned to give birth to a life led by wisdom. Teague urged the graduates not to confuse knowledge for wisdom saying, “Knowledge helps you make a living while wisdom helps you make a life.”
