ESPN 1400 AM To Air SMC Pioneers JUCO Games

SPARTANBURG, SC -- ESPN 1400 Radio has announced that it will broadcast Spartanburg Methodist College's baseball games live from the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado, beginning on Saturday, May 26th at 1:40pm when the Pioneers face Shelton State Community College. Excepting possible conflicts with Wofford's scheduled games in the Southern Conference Tournament, ESPN 1400 plans to broadcast all SMC games through the auspices of the Juco Network with veteran broadcaster Jim Davis handling the play-by-play chores. Fans can also listen to the games live via the internet at www.espn1400am.com . Each SMC broadcast will begin twenty minutes prior to the scheduled first pitch with the Juco Dugout Show.

Pioneers Claim Eastern District, Head to NJCAA World Series

Team Set to Face Shelton State CC On Saturday

SPARTANBURG, SC –  The Spartanburg Methodist College Pioneers  baseball team (51-13) will make its first appearance in the NJCAA Division I World Series since 2003 when it plays Shelton State Community College (44-15), a team that is making its debut at the Series, this Saturday in Grand Junction, CO.

The 15th ranked Pioneers claimed the No. 5 berth in the World Series on Saturday May 19, with a second win in the best-of-three series Eastern District championship against the defending champion, Potomac State College.

The Pioneers followed up a 12-6 win on Friday May 18 with a 11-9 win in 11 innings on Saturday to win the District title and advance to the Series. 

The team leaves Wednesday for Colorado. This will be its third Series appearance under Wallace’s leadership.

The double-elimination Series starts Saturday, May 26, with its championship game being played on June 2. The Series, which is being played at Sam Suplizio Field, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. 

Four teams are making their first appearance this year in the Series. Four other teams are making repeat visits to the Series, including two former champs, Cowley County (Kan.) and San Jacinto (Texas). Defending 2006 NJCAA World Series champs New Mexico Junior College (51-6-1) enter the Series ranked No. 1 in the nation.

The SMC team goes into the Series have matched a school record for total wins in a single season and having just recently claimed its eighth Region X championship under head coach Tim Wallace.

The Pioneers defeated Pitt Community College on May 13 to claim the 2007 Region X title.
