BPW Awards Scholarships To Three Spartanburg College Students

SPARTANBURG, SC – The Spartanburg Business and Professional Women organization recently awarded scholarships to three local women who will be continuing their education in the 2007-2008 academic year.

The scholarships were issued in the amount of $700, through the Vergene Collums Scholarship funds, to the following women:

  • Therese Scheid, a USC Upstate student who entered college as an adult, after the death of her husband. Scheid began her college career at Spartanburg Methodist College, earned a 4.0 GPA and received the College’s highest academic award during the May 2006 graduation ceremonies. After receiving her Associate’s degree at SMC, she is now attending USC Upstate, majoring in Business and maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
  • Allison Caulk, a graduate student at Converse College, where she is pursuing a Master’s in Special Education. Caulk works full-time as an admissions counselor at Spartanburg Methodist College. She is very active in church and community service, having served as one of the leaders of the 2007 Relay for Life on the SMC campus.
  • Dena Gomez, who will be student teaching this fall in order to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Converse College. Gomez works full-time at Converse College, is a mother of three, and is very active in her church and community.

The Vergene Colloms Scholarship is managed by the Spartanburg County Foundation. A 2007 Scholarship Committee of the Spartanburg BPW, consisting of Tracey Jackson, Cyndi Waters, and Ann Bowles, selected the recipients. The BPW raises funds for the scholarship.

Applicants for the scholarship must be a female resident of Spartanburg County at least 25 years in age, who are continuing their college education or are returning to college from the workforce. Applications are available shortly after the beginning of each calendar year.
