SMC Women’s Golf Claims First Title Of First Season
Valsecchi, Eite Named to All-Tournament Team

SPARTANBURG – The Spartanburg Methodist College Women’s Golf team claimed their first tournament title this week following their first place finish in the Montreat College Invitational.

This was SMC’s first win of their inaugural season of play.

The team finished the tournament with a score of 691. Montreat College, the tournament host, finished second at 717. Tennessee Wesleyan came in third with a 722; and at fourth, Kings College finished with a 729.

SMC Freshmen Alex Valsecchi (Dreher HS, Columbia, SC) who shot 85-87 for a two day 172, and Karen Eite (York HS, York, SC), who shot 82-90 for a two-day 172, were named to the All-Tournament Team.

“The ladies and the coaching staff were all very pleased with this win. Playing more of a Division II type schedule helps out and increases their competitive edge. But we’re developing a consistency, from the top to the bottom. Our potential is not even close to being met,” says Owings.

The SMC team opened up their season on Sept. 11 finishing fourth out of nine teams at the Anderson University Invitational.

SMC is scheduled to next play at the Tusculum Invitational Oct. 1 – 2 in Greeneville, TN. The SMC women’s team finished 15 points behind Tusculum at the Anderson University Invitational.

“We have a good chance to be very competitive and have an excellence finish at that event, in particular. But our level of golf for the first season is phenomenal. For a first year team, you couldn’t ask for better,” Owings adds.

SMC Athletic Director Mark Perdue says the talent level of the women’s golf team is “a result of very aggressive recruiting, coupled with strong interest from strong players. Our women’s golf team is one of the best out there this season – and we’re excited for them.”
