Gift Will Help Renovate SMC Landmark

Spartanburg County Foundation  Gives $10,000 For Hammond Hall

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –  A gift from The Spartanburg County Foundation will ensure the longevity of the first building on the present Spartanburg Methodist College campus.

The Foundation made a $10,000 donation toward the renovation of the Charles Pinckney Hammond Men’s Residence Hall. Hammond Hall was constructed in 1913 by the students of the Textile Industrial Institute (SMC’s original name). The first permanent structure at the present campus location, Hammond Hall housed student and faculty housing, classrooms, offices, the dining hall and library. An annex was constructed in 1960, and another renovation was completed in 1991. Hammond Hall currently serves as a men’s residence hall, housing approximately 84 students in 66 rooms.

The Spartanburg County Foundation is a community trust established for the purpose of promoting such charitable pursuits, as in the judgment of the Trustees of the Foundation, will best make for the mental, moral, intellectual, and physical improvement, assistance, relief, and well-being of the citizens of the Greater Spartanburg County, South Carolina area. In 2005 alone, the Foundation has awarded over $85,000 in unrestricted grants, as well as $100,000 in grants through their partnership with the S.C. Rural Communities Compassion Project.
