Soccer Team Wins Championship
Women Headed for Districts in Maryland
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Lady Pioneers Soccer Team of Spartanburg Methodist College deafeated Louisburg Community College 4-1 Oct. 30 and won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region X Championship for the second year in a row.
The Lady Pioneers will travel Nov. 2 to Anne Arundel Community College in Annapolis, Md. For the District Championships. Freshman midfielder Hannah Neipp of Mount Pleasant scored three goals in the Region X game against Louisburg, while the fourth goal came from Marisa Imado, a sophomore midfielder from Osaka, Japan.
The NJCAA also recognized individual players. Neipp was named Player of the Year, while top honors for goalkeeper went to sophomore Amy Davis of Gaffney. Also, top defenders were sophomore Courtney Prince of Greensboro, N.C.; freshman Alyssa Turner of North Augusta; and freshmen Desaraie Woods of Barnwell. Ayana Reid, a sophomore from Columbia, was recognized as a top forward.
At the same time, the men’s team wraps up the season with a 1-4 loss to Cape Fear Community College during the Region X Championship Oct. 28. However, several members of the men’s team won recognition for their performance. Sophomore midfielder Kyle Murphy of Surfside Beach was named All-Region. Receiving Honorable Mention were Shane Abbott, a freshman forward from Surfside Beach; and Peter Davis, a sophomore goalkeeper from Seneca.
