SMC To Host Region X Volleyball Tournament
Lady Pioneers Ranked No. 1 In Region Going Into Tourney
SPARTANBURG –Spartanburg Methodist College will host the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Region X Volleyball Tournament this Friday and Saturday in Bridges Arena.
The SMC Lady Pioneers (16-2, 22-2) go into the tournament ranked No. 1 in the region. They will play in game five of the tournament at 6 pm Friday, in which they will face the winner of Game 1 between No. 8 ranked Wilkes Community College (5-13, 8-14) and No. 9 ranked USC-Salkehatchie (3-15, 3-19)
Head volleyball coach Brittany Harry, in her first season at the helm of the Lady Pioneers, says that she is proud of the hard work that the team has put in to this season and of their strong performance.
“We have very high expectations for this weekend, we feel that we are at an advantage because this is our house. With that we need to defend our house and hopefully on Saturday I can tell my team we are headed to Iowa for the national tournament.” says Harry.
She adds that the team is very excited to host the tournament at SMC this year.
“I’m psyched that we are hosting the tournament. It would be awesome to win the entire thing in front of the home crowd,” she says.
Game 1 of the tournament pits No. 8 ranked Wilkes Community College against No. 9 ranked USC Salkehatchie and starts at 9 am Friday.
“We are very proud to be hosting the tournament at SMC this year and are honored that we have been chosen as host. This gives SMC the opportunity to showcase the quality of athleticism and sportsmanship from across the region to the Spartanburg community,” says SMC Athletic Director Mark Perdue.
Admission is $8 for a tournament pass or $5 per game. Children under 12 admission is free; Please refer to the Spartanburg Methodist College Website for a full tournament bracket.
Spartanburg Methodist College has 14 intercollegiate teams that compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association, which includes colleges in the Carolinas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
The College is in its 96th year of providing a quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
