SMC Baseball Coach Named 2006 ABCA Regional Coach of the Year for Division I
2006 Pioneers Garnered Region X Title, 44-18 Record Under Wallace
SPARTANBURG, SC – Spartanburg Methodist College’s baseball coach, Tim Wa
llace, was recently named the 2006 Diamond Sports American Baseball Coaches Association’s (ABCA) Regional Coach of the Year for Division I of the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA).
Wallace accepted the award in early January at the ABCA’s Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year banquet in Orlando.
“I am happy to receive the 2006 Diamond Sports ABCA Regional Coach of the Year for NJCAA Division I baseball. The 2006 Pioneer baseball squad did a tremendous job in finishing as Region X Champions following a phenomenal season. I am well aware that the award I’ve received is testament to the effort that they put forth. I wish that I could forward a plaque to all of the 2006 Pioneers,” says Wallace.
Wallace, who is beginning his 16th season of coaching the SMC baseball team, led the 2006 team, which closed off the season with a 44-18 record, to a Region X championship. His SMC teams have produced a 654-210 total record, seven Region X titles and two NJCAA World Series trips.
The three-time Region X coach of the year has seen 42 of his his former SMC players sign professional contracts. Wallce, a former second round pick for the St. Louis Cardinals, played professionally for seven years prior to beginning his coaching career.
“Coach Wallace is a true leader and an inspiration to his players and the Spartanburg Methodist College community. We congratulate him on receiving this award and thank him for all of his hard work and dedication,” says Mark Perdue, SMC athletic director.
Wallace holds a B.A. in Sociology from Wofford College and an M.A. in Physical Education from Gardner Webb. He and Beth, his wife of 23 years, have three children. Their son, Jacob, will be playing with the SMC baseball team this season. Daughter Amy Kate, a Dorman High School senior has signed to play volleyball at Wofford. Their youngest daughter, Grace is a sophomore at Dorman.
Spartanburg Methodist College is in its 96th year of providing a quality education to students in a Christian environment. More than 90 percent of SMC graduates continue their education at other institutions of higher learning.
