More than 150 alumni and guests came out to participate in the 2008 Alumni Weekend on March 28 and 29. That Friday, guests were treated to a State of the College address by SMC President Dr. Charles Teague, a reception, campus tours and a classical guitar concert by 1985 SMC graduate Thad Tinsley. Guests gathered the next morning for an awards luncheon and recognition of all alumni. Heather Waldrep (SMC Class of 1998, Associate in Arts) was presented the Young Alumnus of the Year Award. Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright (SMC Class of 2002, Associate in Criminal Justice) was presented the Alumni of the Year Award. The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Spartanburg County residents Fletcher (Textile Industrial Institute Class of 1941, Associate in Arts) and Ruth Thompson (Spartanburg Junior College, Class of 1942). Several class reunions were held that afternoon, with the class of 1955 having the largest turnout in celebration of their 50th anniversary.
