In 2001, Spartanburg Methodist College freshmen participated in the pilot program of the Freshmen Day of Service.

During Basic Orientation, students were sent out into the community in small groups to participate in a wide range of service projects. Types of projects included working in soup kitchens, food pantries, with Habitat for Humanity and at local churches.

We are now embarking on the adventure for the sventh year in a row.. We are excited about the opportunities we have to serve the citizens of the Upstate area.With your orientation group and a faculty/staff learning partner, you will be assigned a specific project for the day. This is your chance to make a difference in the community of which you will be a part, and a chance to gain new skills and learn more about organizations you may want to continue to volunteer with after the day is done.

	The Purpose of SMC Day of Service To reinforce the biblical principles of serving others and positive Christian stewardship
	To introduce students to the ideals and benefits of community service and service learning
	To introduce students to the necessity of community service and service learning
	To introduce the service opportunities available in the Spartanburg area
	To have fun!
	To learn through hands-on work in a community service environment
	To help students develop competence in various skill areas
	To help students establish themselves as a valuable member of a community
	To encourage students to make service to others a part of who they are

Studies show that people who actively participate in community service activities weekly live happier, healthier, and more productive lives. Through service, people often gain as much or more than is given.
