Men's Basketball Coach

Rob Burke enters his fourth season as head coach of the SMC Men's basketball team in the 2007-2008 season.

Prior to SMC, Burke was Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Campbell University. He has also served as Head Junior Varsity Basketball Coach, Assistant Basketball Coach and coached Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams at Limestone College. Prior to that, Burke played overseas for the County Clair Jets, a professional basketball team in Ireland. He also briefly coached the Jets.

For Burke, basketball is a family tradition. His father, Bob Burke, coached 22 years at Chowan College, 3 years as Assistant Basketball Coach at the University of Hawaii and is currently employed with the Portland Trailblazers of the National Basketball Association. Burke counted it a privilege to play under his father for four years while both were at Chowan.

Burke is a native of Murfreesboro, N.C. and a graduate of Chowan College, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management. He is currently working on a Master of Education degree from Campbell University. He and wife Neilly live in Spartanburg and have two daughters.

Michael Jones, a Chattanooga, TN native, returns for a second season in 2007 to serve as Assistant Men's Basketball coach.  Prior to coming to SMC Michael spent time on the coaching staff at Spartanburg High School. This is his second stint with SMC Athletics, with the first being under Bryan Garmroth. His duties include conducting parts of practice, study hall for players, recruiting, and skill development.

Jones earned his Bachelor's of Science degree in special education. He was a two-year member of the basketball team at Georgia College in Milledgeville, GA and led that school to two appearances in the NCAA Div. II national tournament, including the Elite Eight in 2000, and Peach Belt Conference championships in 1999 and 2000.

Jones earned South Atlantic Regional MVP honors as a senior.  He attended Spartanburg Methodist College in 1997 and 1998 where he earned as Associate of Arts degree.  He is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Educational Administration degree from the University of South Carolina.
