SPARTANBURG, SC -- Spartanburg Methodist College’s Lady Pioneers finished with a 2-3 record this past weekend in the Aiken Technical College Tournament, in a matchup of some of the top-ranked junior college teams in the southeast United States.
The Lady Pioneers finished 2-1 in pool play to qualify for the Gold Bracket, for which the Top 8 out of 24 qualified.
The Lady Pioneers opened the tournament with a thrilling 2-1 victory over South Georgia. Freshman pitcher Brittany Scoggins, of Boiling Springs, SC, scattered four hits and struck out six to get the win.
In their second game, the Pioneers dropped a 6-0 loss to nationally-ranked Wallace State Community College-Hanceville. Sophomore pitcher Chelsi Edwards, of Inman, SC, took the loss, while striking out 9 in the game.
In the final deciding pool game, the Lady Pioneers made a great come back to win 4-3 in extra innings against Truett-McConnell College. The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation.
Truett-McConnell scored two runs in their half of the tie-breaking inning. But the Lady Pioneers fought back to score two runs on the strength of freshman pitcher Heather Robinson’s homerun. Then they platted the winning run on a long double by freshman infielder Alex Windham, of Fort Mill, SC, scoring Laura Trout, a freshman from Summerville, SC.
Scoggins went the distance to pitch another gem of a game, to bring her record to 5-0 on the season.
As the Lady Pioneers entered the Gold Bracket play against Georgia Perimeter College, they started strong jumping into the lead in the first inning scoring one run.
Georgia Perimeter came back to tie the game with one of their own in the bottom of the first. SMC came back with two runs in the top of the 2nd inning, to take a 3-1 lead. Georgia Perimeter tied the game at three each in the 4th inning, and then scored two runs in the 6th inning to take the win.
In their final game of the tournament SMC dropped a 6-0 decision to Gadsden State Community College.
Leading hitters for the tournament were Laura Trout who went 10 for 15 and Alex Windham who went 5 for 13. Brittany Scoggins pitched some outstanding games winning two and losing one and is 5-1 on the season with an ERA below 1.00.
