Lady Pioneers Blank USC Salkehatchie In Doubleheader
ALLENDALE, SC -- The Spartanburg Lady Pioneers shut out USC Salkehatchie in the teams’ first meeting of the season on March 1.
In game one, which the Pioneers won 7-0, freshman pitcher Brittany Scoggins, of Boiling Springs, SC, gave up two hits and struck out 12.
SMC scored twice in the first inning and once in the second inning primarily on USC Salkehatchie errors and aggressive base-running.
In the fifth, sophomore Anna Oswald, of White Knoll, SC, drove in a pair of runs with a double. Freshman Laura Trout, of Summerville, SC, had two RBIs in the sixth to complete the scoring when she drove in freshmen Brooke Lewis, of Lake Lure, NC, and Shante' Rivers, of Columbia, SC. Lewis and Rivers both delivered on pinch hitting opportunities.
Game two, which SMC won 4-0, saw pitcher Chelsi Edwards, of Inman, SC, giving up two hits and striking out nine to gain the shutout victory.
Scoggins tripled in the fourth inning and later scored an infield hit from Oswald. In the sixth, inning freshman Heather Robinson, of Cambridge, Ontario, and freshman Alex Windham, from Fort Mill, SC, singled and came in to score on sophomore Amber Hartleys’s hit to left field. Hartley, from Batesburg, SC, then scored on a pinch hit double by Rivers.
"Both pitchers were outstanding today," says head coach Rick Pauly.
“Scoggins only walked one batter and Edwards yielded no walks. They were hitting their spots and mixing in some great off-speed pitches to keep the Salkehatchie batters off stride. Defensively we played well and kept out intensity up for both games which made a huge difference in game two which was close until SMC broke it open with three runs. We used the entire roster today and everyone came through when it counted,” he adds.
The Pioneers now stand 4-0 in Region X play and have the next week off for spring vacation.
