SMC Softball Continues To Impress 

The Spartanburg Methodist College Pioneer softball team closed out the Furman University Tournament on Sept. 23 with a 1-2-1 performance, holding its own again NCAA Division I and  Division II schools.

The Lady Pioneers started the tournament Saturday with a 6-3 win over Division II Anderson University. Freshman Brittany Scoggins, of Boiling Springs, started on the mound with relief help from Sophomore Chelsi Edwards, of Inman, to seal the win.

SMC was not so fortunate against Division II North Greenville University. Three critical errors led to 5 runs, all unearned in a 5-1 loss. Sophomore Ashley McGuirk, of Fort Mill, pitched a strong 4 innings with Edwards relieving. Jennifer Lamonica, a Freshman from Toronto, Canada, drove in the lone run with a strong hit to the left side of the infield.

SMC closed off the afternoon against Division II Wingate University. The Lady Pioneers jumped out to a 2-1 lead and which held for 4 innings. In the fifth inning, Wingate tied the game at 2-2 but SMC fought back to take the lead 4-2 in the sixth.  The Lady Pioneers' lead held until 2 outs in the last inning when Wingate managed to eak out 2 runs, finishing the game in a 4-4 tie. Scoggins pitched an impressive game, holding Wingate to 5 hits.

The Lady Pioneers opened Sunday against Division I Furman University. SMC jumped to an early 2-0 lead which held it for 4 innings. Furman responded in the fifth inning, tying the game with two unearned runs. However, the last inning proved to be fatal to SMC as Furman scored two unearned runs, squeezing out a 4-2 win. Edwards' pitching held Furman to 5 hits and 5 recorded strikeouts.

Freshman Laura Trout, of Summerville, had an outstanding weekend going 7-12 hitting with 6 RBIs.  Freshman Heather Robinson, of Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, had a very productive weekend going 4-11 with 6 RBI’s. Sophomores Whitney Wiles, of Starr, and Bree Shirley, of Iva, “set the table” all weekend slapping their way to a combined  .571 on base average.
