The FAFSA is as important as your college applications: it will give you access to government money for college—the kind you don’t have to pay back. It’s also the first necessary step to qualify for SMC scholarships.
You can submit the FAFSA now - so don't wait!

Just follow our tips for what you’ll need to complete your FAFSA:

1 - ID: You’ll need a Social Security card or your Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen).

2 - TAX INFO: This probably means you’ll have to talk your parents. Gather your most recent federal income tax returns (if you have them), and theirs—along with W-2 forms and 1040 forms. If your parents haven’t done their taxes yet, no problem: you can use last year’s tax returns, or even the return from two years ago.

3 - SCHOOL CODE: Find out the school code for any school you are interested in including on the FAFSA. SMC's code is 03447. The FAFSA website also has a tool you can use to search school codes.

4 - OTHER INCOME INFO: Do you or your family have non-taxable income? Here are some examples that you should consider including:

  • Veteran’s benefits (including non-education benefits)
  • Military or clergy allowances
  • Social Security income
  • Welfare benefits
  • Child support

5 - UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES: Make note of big life changes—including them on your FAFSA can help. Some changes to mention are:

  • Divorce or separation
  • Large medical or dental expenses
  • Death
  • Job loss

6 - SELECTIVE SERVICE (for men): If you’re a man, you’ll need to make sure you’re registered with Selective Service to qualify for Federal Pell Grants, Stafford Loans, and other programs.

7 - SAVE COPIES!: Lastly, after you submit your FAFSA, make sure to keep paper and scanned or photographed copies of all your info. You don’t want to have to hunt it all down again.

Remember that SMC offers many merit- (great grades) and need-based scholarships.

When you apply to SMC, we’ll automatically consider you for scholarships. But you’ll need to submit your FAFSA. Start prepping for it today!
