Secrets of Planning College Visits

The #1 secret to planning the perfect college visit is to start now. The sooner you can give some serious thought to where you might want to go the better. Here’s what you need to do to get started and make the most of your college visits.

VISIT SMC

SMC's new bachelor's (four-year) degree is coming soon! If you enroll in fall or spring 2019, you will be able to stay at SMC for all four years. More info on the new program here.

The First 7 Steps:

Step 1: Make a list of the schools you’re interested in. Visit websites, take notes, and narrow down your favorites.

Step 2: Sign up to receive emails, special invitations, and more information about the schools on your list. Sign up for invitations to SMC events here.

Step 3: Take virtual tours of the schools on your list to get a feel for the campuses. Try services like eCampusTours. SMC also has a virtual reality tour you can try here.

Step 4: Plan real-life visits to the schools that seem like a good fit. One low-stress idea: include a college stop as a side trip of a family vacation, instead of making one long and difficult road trek going school to school.

Step 5: Before you arrive, ask about sitting in on a class in your favorite subject. That way, you’ll get to experience the style of the professors and what it might be like to actually go to that school. You can also ask to meet with financial aid counselors, athletic coaches, admission counselors, and others on campus that can answer your questions.

Step 6: Don’t be afraid to ask the student tour guides lots of questions: they may work for the college, but they also know what it’s like to be a student there. They’ll give you the low-down about the college you’re considering.

Step 7: Keep a journal. Write down everything you liked and disliked about your visits. It’s easy to forget the details so make sure you’re keeping track of your thoughts. You’ll be glad you did when you’re making your final decision.

More secrets are coming soon, so keep an eye on your in-box and mailbox!
