Facts & Figures

Our 110 acre, beautifully wooded campus is located within very easy driving distance to South Carolina’s coast and North Carolina’s slopes, as well as the cities of Asheville, Atlanta, Charleston and Charlotte. With an average of 226 sunny days a year, Spartanburg attracts visitors and residents from around the world. Six institutions of higher learning make it an officially designated college town, while world headquarters for global corporations like Extended Stay Hotels, Advance America, QS/1 Data Systems, Denny’s restaurants and Milliken help make it a true international city. Spartanburg is also home to the NFL Carolina Panther’s training camp.

You’ll enjoy the benefits of a small private college. We deliberately maintain a population of around 800 students. All of our students are freshmen and sophomores, nearly equally male and female (52% male, 48% female). 75% of our students live on campus in seven residence halls, enjoying friendships with young men and women from diverse backgrounds and cultures across the nation, and countries from as far as Japan.

Our student/faculty ratio averages 17:1, with extensive one-on-one instruction and mentoring. At SMC, you’ll be known, and you won’t have to compete with juniors or seniors for face time with your professors. We also engage new computer-assisted and video-enhanced technology for classroom studies and career-choice counseling.

Liberal Arts

We are a liberal arts college. We believe that the characteristics acquired through a liberal arts education are the ideal foundation for lifelong learning. Our students are challenged to think beyond a linear field of study. New ideas are encouraged, tested, and put into practice. Group projects teach understanding and openness to the ideas of others. In-class presentations sharpen communication skills. Leadership abilities are strengthened through participation in student organizations. Athletics foster a sense of loyalty and commitment. Creativity and imagination are encouraged by involvement in the arts and educational programs. Community outreach projects foster civic and social responsibility. At SMC, our students graduate prepared to use the skills they attain here to build careers, lead others and strengthen our society.

The Pioneer spirit permeates the campus here at SMC. Our nationally ranked intercollegiate programs include thirteen sports for men and women and intramural sports.

You’ll be active and included at SMC. There are no Juniors or Seniors to wait in line behind for your chance to participate. Our clubs, events organizations, and even student government positions are filled with freshmen and sophomores like you. You’ll also grow through our many opportunities to serve others on campus and in the community.

We are associated with the United Methodist Church and encourage the open exploration and expression of faith. Our culture is inclusive and supportive. We welcome the searching soul and dissenting opinion alike. More than 15 different religious backgrounds are represented here, unified by the belief that core foundations of integrity, honesty, charity and service are valuable character traits that build strong citizenship and leadership in people of all viewpoints.
