SMC announces new faculty, dean of students

Spartanburg Methodist College (SMC) has appointed two new faculty members and a new dean of students.

Dean of Students

Teresa Ferguson was appointed dean of students, effective May 1. Ferguson will be a member of the college’s senior leadership team and will oversee numerous campus departments that directly impact student success, including student activities, campus safety, health services, career development and counseling.

Before her appointment as dean, Ferguson served as SMC’s chief of campus safety from 2006-2017. She has also served as a school resource officer for the Duncan Police Department of Duncan, South Carolina; and as a community patrol officer with the City of Greer, South Carolina, Police Department.

Ferguson holds a M.S. in criminal justice administration from the University of Cincinnati and a B.A. in liberal studies from Limestone College.

Faculty

Dr. Jennifer Hyder was appointed professor of biology, effective Aug. 14. Hyder served previously as an instructor for the University of South Florida where she taught courses in biology, anatomy, physiology and ecology. She received her Ph.D. and B.S. degrees in biology from the University of South Florida, Tampa.

Dr. Summer Lashley was appointed director of the criminal justice program and professor of criminal justice, effective July 1. Lashley comes to SMC from Campbell University, where she served as an adjunct faculty member teaching courses in criminal justice. She received her Ph.D. in public safety with a criminal justice specialization from Capela University. She also holds a M.S. degree in criminal forensic studies from Florida Gulf Coast University and a B.S. degree in Exercise Science from Florida State University. In December, she will complete a M.S. degree in veterinary forensic science from the University of Florida.
