The Scholarship is available for first-time college students and students transferring to SMC from another college. It is only available for students taking on-campus classes.

Here's how the Pioneer Promise Scholarship works:
The Pioneer Promise Scholarship is available for students who are eligible for the S.C. LIFE Scholarship and have also graduated with a 4.0+ high school GPA. It is only available for students taking on-campus classes.
It's important to know that SMC, like most colleges, applies your South Carolina LIFE Scholarship and South Carolina Tuition Grant, plus any additional federal- or state-funded grants/scholarships, toward the cost of your tuition and fees. SMC then covers the remaining cost of your tuition, fees and books.
Here's a very general example of how we cover your tuition:
$16,200 (SMC's 2023-2024 tuition)
$3,150 (SMC's 2023-2024 fees)
- $5,000 (Your Pell grant for 2023-2024)
- $5,000 (Your SC Life Scholarship)

$9,350 (balance remaining after grants and scholarships are applied)
-$9,350 (SMC scholarship for students with a 4.0+ high school or college GPA)

$0 (The total amount of your tuition and fees bill)
