Questions about SMC Policies:

Bridges, Judd, Kingman, Parsons, Hammond and Sparrow Halls are controlled by a computerized card access system and remain locked at all times. Access is gained using the student’s ID card and a personal identification number. Willard Hall requires a special code be entered to gain entry. Students are not permitted to add additional locks to their doors. Campus Safety is on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For more information, please contact Campus Safety (864.587.4003).

How do I report a crime?
Contact Campus Safety at 864-587-4003 or come by the Campus Safety Office in the basement of Kingman Hall. If you contact 911, Spartanburg County Dispatch will also notify Campus Safety.
Can I get into a building after hours? Locked buildings after hours are only accessible by authorized personnel who are issued a key. Requests for access must be approved by the appropriate College representative.
Is smoking allowed on campus? Spartanburg Methodist College is a tobacco free/smoke free campus. This includes the use of any vaping device or chewing tobacco.
How safe is Spartanburg Methodist College? Campus Safety maintains a monthly Crime Log and a monthly Fire Safety Log for the most recent three years that is available in the Campus Safety Office. Campus Safety also prepares, publishes, and distributes the annual security report required by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013 (VAWA) amendments. This annual security report is provided to all current students and employees via electronic mail, and to any applicant for enrollment or employment upon request. Copies of the most recent three years of reports are available in the Campus Safety Office.

Spartanburg Methodist College maintains a subscription to a third-party voice and email messaging service called “E2 Campus” that enables the notification system to email messages for emergency alerts to students, faculty, and staff of the College automatically. You may also opt in your cell phone or other email addresses.
Emergency Alerts can include evacuation notices, severe weather warnings, and lockdowns.

All vehicles parked on the College campus are required to have either a parking decal or a parking pass. Both can be obtained for free from Campus Safety 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How do I get a parking decal? Parking decals are available at the Campus Safety Office. The Campus Safety Office is located on the backside of Kingman Hall.

What do I need to bring to register my vehicle for a parking decal? Your vehicle needs to have a state issued license plate. Please bring you vehicle registration card with you. Any vehicle with a temporary tag will require a temporary parking pass issued by Campus Safety. If your vehicle is already registered with Campus Safety but is issued a new license plate, you will need to notify the Campus Safety Office so our records can be updated.

How much does a parking decal cost? A parking decal costs $30. However, this is included in your registration fee when you first enrolled at SMC, so you do not need to pay when registering your vehicle for the first time. Each replacement decal though will cost $30.

How long is the parking decal good for? The parking decals transfer over each academic year, so you do not need to worry about acquiring a new decal every year. However, if a decal is lost or damaged, you will need to purchase a new decal.

What if a drive a motorcycle? Any motor vehicle, including a motorcycle, must be registered with Campus Safety.

If I don’t live on campus, do I still need a parking decal? All students (even commuters), faculty, and staff members that park on campus are required to have parking decals on their registered vehicle. Parking passes are available 24 hours a day at the Campus Safety Office.

Do I need a parking pass if I my registered car is at a repair shop and I am driving another car to campus? Yes, temporary parking passes are available at the Campus Safety Office.

If a friend from out of town is staying overnight, do they need a parking pass? Yes, guest parking passes are available through Community Life. Get with your Community Assistant for your dorm to obtain a parking pass for your friend.

How much does a temporary parking pass cost? Temporary parking passes are available free of charge.

Can I park my vehicle in a No Parking area or in the Fire Lane if I leave my flashers on or if I am waiting for someone? No, unless you want a ticket. Fire lanes are for emergency vehicles. SMC vehicles on official business and approved vendors may park in No Parking areas.

Will I still be ticketed if I register my vehicle but do not put the decal on my vehicle? Yes, all registered vehicles are required to have the issued decal affixed to the lower lefthand corner of the rear windshield or rear bumper.

As a student, can I park in the visitor parking spaces in either traffic circle? No, the visitor parking spaces in both traffic circles are for visitors only. Vehicles with student decals are not to park in visitor parking spaces. Students without parking decals on their vehicles and pretending to be visitors will be citated twice for improper parking and for having no decal.

My parking decal was damaged, what should I do? Your decal will need to be replaced at a cost of $30. Come by the Campus Safety Office to obtain a new parking decal.

What if I don’t agree with the citation? You have the opportunity to file an appeal within 10 days from when the citation was issued. You may refer to the appeals procedure available in SMC Student Handbook. All decisions made during the appeals process are final.

Where do I pay a parking citation? The Business Office located at the Buchheit Administration Building. They are available Monday through Thursday 8am to 5pm and Friday 8am to 1:30pm.

Why am I being fined when I was not driving the vehicle at the time the citation was issued? The person who the parking decal was issued to is responsible for their vehicle at all times while the vehicle is on campus property, regardless of who was driving the vehicle at the time of the violation.

What happens if I don’t pay the fine? If payment is not made after 10 days from when the citation was issued, the fine is increased by $10. Students cannot register for classes for the next academic semester and transcripts will not be released until all fines are paid in full. Vehicles can also be booted with a vehicle immobilizer and/or towed at the owner’s/operator’s expense.

What do I do if my vehicle was broken into? Contact Campus Safety to file a report. SMC is not responsible for any loss or damage to any motor vehicle or its contents while parked on campus property.

Does Campus Safety assist in unlocking vehicles? Campus Safety does not assist with unlocking vehicles. A third-party company may be contacted to assist in unlocking a vehicle at the owner’s/operator’s expense.

SLED Certified Security Officers

Class 1 Police Officers certified through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy and commissioned as South Carolina State Constables.

All officers are also CPR/AED certified and trained in first aid.

SMC campus police officers have authority to perform all law enforcement duties to include:

Handling calls for service

Patrolling within the jurisdiction

Making arrests

Enforcing traffic laws

Writing citations

Conducting criminal investigations

Victim Services

Every student of Spartanburg Methodist College is required to have an SMC identification card in their possession when on campus.
All SMC ID cards are issued through Campus Safety and are available at the Campus Safety Office Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm.
Your SMC ID card has a built-in keycard feature, which can include a meal plan or access certain areas on campus such as residence halls and the Pioneer Pantry.
If you lost or misplaced your ID card, report it immediately to Campus Safety. Students may be required to pay $10 for a replacement ID card.

NEVER lend your SMC ID card to another person.

Personal safety starts with you. Although the College campus is relatively safe, criminal activity can still occur. However, you can help us prevent crime on our campus. It is important that you educate yourself on good safety habits. The following are good habits to follow while you are on campus:
- Be aware of your surroundings. Do not become distracted with your cell phone or while wearing headphones.
- Travel in pairs or with a group if possible.
- Tell someone where you are going and when you are going to return. Keep the GPS locator function on your cell phone “on.”
- Make sure the College has your correct contact information on file.
- Park and walk in well-lit areas on the campus. Campus Safety works closely with the Facilities Department to ensure lighting on campus is operational and adequate.
- Make sure doors are locked and closed behind you. Lock your car and do not leave any valuables inside or in open view. Lock the door to your dorm room/suite even if you step out for just a minute or to use the bathroom. Lock your valuables in a secured box or safe. NEVER lend your keys to someone else. When you exit a residence hall, make sure the door closes behind you so that no unauthorized person enters the building. NEVER prop open exterior doors to residence halls.
- Ask individuals you do not recognize for their identification (SMC ID) prior to allowing them entrance into any building or room/suite.
- If you see something suspicious, contact Campus Safety at 864-587-4003.
- Campus Safety is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We can provide escorts to buildings and vehicles. Our office is located in the basement of Kingman Hall.

Title IX Statement & Forms

Title IX of the Education Amendments was passed by the United States Congress on June 23, 1972, and was signed into law on July 1, 1972. Most recently, Title IX was updated effective August 14, 2020. Title IX is a federal civil rights law that prohibits sex discrimination in education programs and activities.

The Title IX Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation, and monitoring of meaningful efforts to comply with Title IX legislation, regulation, and case law. The Title IX Coordinator oversees compliance of SMC's policy in relation to Title IX developments; implementation of grievance procedures, including notification, investigation and resolution of complaints; providing ongoing training and educational opportunities to the SMC community; conducting and/or coordinating investigations of complaints received pursuant to Title IX; ensuring a fair and neutral process for all parties; and monitoring all other aspects of SMC's compliance.

SMC offers a variety of on-campus resources in addition to being connected with off campus organizations that provide support to victims of sexual assault, dating violence, and domestic violence.
