Spartanburg Methodist College baseball student-athlete Miles Corcoran didn’t hesitate when he saw a family in danger.
While navigating an icy portion of road near campus after an early class on Wednesday morning, the sport management major saw another vehicle lose control and slide off the road in his rearview mirror.
“I passed the truck and looked back,” Corcoran said. “When I saw her slam on the brakes and go off the road, I knew right then I had to go back.”
The junior pitcher immediately pulled over and ran down the hill to the crash site. The driver was exiting her vehicle — along with three young children, all under the age of five.
“I saw the kids and thought, ‘I’ve got to make sure they’re safe,’” Corcoran said.
As Spartanburg County authorities were dispatched, Corcoran stayed with the family, holding the children and keeping them calm while they waited for help to arrive. Thanks to his quick response, the children remained safe until authorities reached the scene and assisted the family.
First responders acknowledged Corcoran’s actions, recognizing his selfless efforts in a moment that could have ended far differently.
In the face of uncertainty, Corcoran stepped up — proving that leadership doesn’t always happen on the field.
