Your Degree Shows What You’ve Learned. Your Capstone Shows What You Can Do.

A capstone is traditionally the final stone placed at the top of a structure, marking its completion. At Spartanburg Methodist College, the Capstone Project plays the same role for every bachelor’s degree. It’s where classroom knowledge and professional skills come together as students plan, lead, and complete a project of their own, gaining experience they can carry directly into the workplace.
Built on the Camak Core
Every SMC bachelor’s degree student completes the Camak Core, the college’s professional development program. It builds the critical skills needed to succeed in the workplace: leadership, communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and project management.
The Capstone is where students put those skills to work. Instead of a final exam or a traditional research paper, each student designs and leads a real project of their own choosing. They might launch a community initiative, organize a campus event, or create an organization built to last. The only requirement is that the project must solve a problem, fill a need, or explore an opportunity.
Real Work, Real Challenges
Capstone projects unfold over three semesters, with students in charge from start to finish. They set goals, build plans, coordinate with others, manage timelines, and make difficult decisions when things don’t go as expected. Along the way, they experience the same realities professionals face every day, like shifting priorities, unexpected obstacles, and the need to adapt without losing sight of the goal.
That hands-on experience is the point. Students don’t just study how projects are managed or how teams are led. They do it, and they learn from both their successes and their setbacks.
At the end, each student presents their work to a panel of faculty, staff, and community professionals. It’s a real-world presentation to a real audience, and students explain not only what they accomplished but how they grew as leaders in the process.
Confidence That Comes From Experience
Because every student chooses their own project, no two Capstones look alike. But every student finishes with the same advantage: proof that they can lead, solve problems, and communicate effectively under real conditions.
That proof builds confidence. When SMC graduates walk into a job interview or fill out a graduate school application, they aren’t describing skills in the abstract. They’re sharing concrete examples of challenges they faced, decisions they made, and results they delivered. And when they start their careers, they already know what it takes to move an idea from concept to completion.
The Capstone is more than a final class. It’s the culmination of a student’s degree and their Camak Core experience. SMC graduates leave with more than knowledge in their field. They leave with experience putting that knowledge to work.
