John Rucker to Join SMC Board of Trustees, Continuing Late Wife’s Legacy

Retired 8th Judicial Circuit Family Court Judge John M. Rucker of Newberry, S.C., will join the Spartanburg Methodist College Board of Trustees, filling the seat held for nearly nine years by his late wife, Harriett, who passed away earlier this year.

Rucker will step into the role at the board’s upcoming meeting in October, serving out the remainder of Harriett’s term.

“We are honored that John has agreed to join us and continue Harriett’s great work with this board,” said Board Chair Catherine Gramling. “She was a tremendous presence on this board, and we know John will bring the same passion for promoting education to this role.”

A school teacher by profession, Harriett Rucker brought that same passion for education to her work on the board, where her vision and drive helped shape the college’s academic growth. She was instrumental in adding and expanding SMC’s four-year degree programs.

SMC President Scott Cochran praised the decision to bring Rucker onto the board. In accepting the appointment, Rucker reflected on the opportunity to carry his wife’s work forward.

“I am honored that Scott and the board asked me to continue Harriett’s work for SMC,” Rucker said. “I look forward to providing what insight I can to support the continued growth and success of the College.”

John Rucker brings decades of public service to his new role. Before his election to the bench, he served as a South Carolina state representative and as a commissioner for the South Carolina Tax Commission. He went on to serve 28 years on the Family Court before retiring in 2016.

A long-time resident of Newberry, Rucker also served as the City Recorder and ran his own law practice there. He holds both a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from the University of South Carolina.
