SMC Board Adds Restaurateur ‘Hamp’ Lindsey as Trustee

Local Business Leader ‘Hamp’ Lindsey Joins SMC Board of Trustees

SMC fountain in springSpartanburg Methodist College named James Beard award-winning local restaurateur Wade “Hamp” Lindsey, Jr., to its Board of Trustees following confirmation of his nomination by the United Methodist Church Annual Conference.

“We look forward to welcoming such a respected local businessman to our Board,” said incoming Chair Catherine Gramling. “Mr. Lindsey’s experience and reputation in the community will help us strengthen relationships throughout Spartanburg. He is a tremendous voice to add to our Board, and we look forward to the perspective he’ll bring.”

Lindsey is the President and CEO of Wade’s Restaurant, Inc., a family-owned business in Spartanburg, S.C., where he has been actively involved since 1977. Under his leadership, Wade’s has grown from a small drive-in into a multi-location restaurant business in Spartanburg. The restaurant won the 2024 James Beard America’s Classics Award, given to local establishments that represent the character of their community.

He brings a tremendous amount of local leadership experience to the Board, including past stints as Chair of the Spartanburg Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau. He is also a past president of both the Piedmont Area and South Carolina Restaurant Associations.

In addition to Lindsey’s approval, the UMC Annual Conference also approved second terms for Grant Close and Ashley Williams. Beginning the new term in July, the SMC Board of Trustees officers will be:
