SMC's First Step to Career counseling

As a starting point for our Career Counseling, in SMC 101 you'll complete PathwayU, a free online assessment that helps you understand your personality, interests, skills and career values. By uncovering your values, dreams and career goals, assessments can help affirm the direction you want to go in, or they can help you see that you may be happier pursuing a different path.

Internships

SMCX Career has a variety of internship programs that offer an opportunity for you no matter your career path or class level. If you'd like to explore what open internship listings we currently have available, please log into Handshake.

Exploratory internships: Short, shadowing-based internships that allow you to get a high-level view of a career or job field to determine if you are interested.
Advanced Internships for Bachelor's Degree Programs: On-ground students must complete 120 Hours of an Internship as part of the Camak Core curriculum in our Bachelor's Degree program.

What's Handshake?

Handshake is a career services platform EXCLUSIVE for current and recent college students, where you can find jobs and internships.

All students have a Handshake account starting their first year at SMC until they graduate!

Job searching

SMCX Career hosts a variety of PDEV events, including Career Fairs, Career Panels, Employer Tables, and MORE! Each semester, employers visit campus to interact with students and discuss opportunities in many fields.

A good resume is critical in finding an internship, job opportunity, and our team is here to assist you with resume writing tips that highlight your qualifications. We are also here to practice with you to improve your interviewing skills. Your resume might get you an interview, but it is the interview itself that will help you make the most of your opportunity.

Camak Core | Professional development education

SMC’s bachelor’s degree program is designed to equip you for your next move – an internship, the career of your dreams, or grad school.

SMC's four-year degree is different because it features the innovative Camak Core. The Camak Core, named for SMC’s founder, Dr. David English Camak, is a required 6 courses – or 18 hours of degree credit – of professional development (soft skills and experiences for personal and career success). The Camak Core makes up one-third of your total degree hours. These classes and hands-on career experiences will give you an 18- to 24-month head start on learning the habits, skills and behaviors that are vital for workplace success. No other liberal arts college offers this much career preparation for college credit.

Camak Core Courses"PDEV" is short for Professional Development! Introduction To The Camak Core

PDEV 320: CDE dives into the heart of a group project and places students with community partners where they can learn about specific an organization and identify solutions for their success. Simultaneously to the group project, students will start formulating their ideas and identifying key partners for their Capstone project. PDEV 300 is completed with PDEV 310 where they will learn the skills needed to work on a team.

PDEV 430: You've taken 5 PDEV classes, let's put it all together! During this course you will implement a project of YOUR CHOICE to show off all of the skills you have learned in the Camak Core. From starting your own business to organizing an event series to creating a project that gives back AND MORE, the possibilities are endless! All students must complete a Capstone project to graduate with their Bachelor's degree from SMC.

About APEX Events! During Capstone, Students Present the Results of Their Projects and Network with Employers at APEX!
