South Carolina played a key part in the American Revolution. Several SMC history students trekked to one of the key battle sites that helped turn the tide of the war for the colonists – Cowpens National Battlefield.
Dr. Michael Haggerty, Dr. Melissa L’Heureux, and Dr. Kirk Hansen led a field trip to the battlefield to share the lesson of how the soldiers and militia of South Carolina held off a strong British force and kept them from gaining a tactical advantage in the southern states.
Students viewed an instructional video about the battle of Cowpens before taking to the battlefield themselves with a park ranger to get a first-person view of how and where the battle took place.
In the video below, Dr. Haggerty and some of the students involved share their thoughts on the trip and the importance of Cowpens in the history of our nation.
