Spartanburg Methodist College names Katie Zimmerman head volleyball coach

Spartanburg Methodist College has named Katie Zimmerman Head Women’s volleyball coach, starting during the 2018 season. Zimmerman is succeeding Megan Aiello, who became SMC’s athletic director May 1.
“Katie has a very impressive background as a student-athlete, playing both indoor and beach volleyball, and as an assistant coach at the NCAA DI level,” says Aiello. “She is focused, driven, and has a true passion for the game. Katie displayed a genuine caring and warmth for the student-athletes under her leadership, and we’re confident she’s the right person to lead our program here at SMC.”
Zimmerman received a master’s degree in exercise science and rehabilitation sciences from the University of South Carolina in December 2018. While there, she participated on the Division I beach volleyball team as a member of the winningest pair in South Carolina school history. Prior to obtaining her master’s, she received a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Wichita State University, where she graduated summa cum laude and participated on the school’s Division I volleyball team. The Wichita State team had 3 NCAA tournament appearances and a Sweet Sixteen berth.
Outside of college teams, Zimmerman has served as assistant coach for the University of Louisiana volleyball team, where she helped improve the team’s wins from 10-21 in 2016 to a 21-11 record in 2017. She also coached the Cajun Elite Volleyball Club and camps at Wichita State University and the University of South Carolina.
